Opera on 3

on BBC Radio 3

English National Opera and the National Theatre collaborate in a fully-staged performance of Janacek's song cycle The Diary of One Who Vanished, performed in a new English translation by Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney , directed by Deborah Warner. Janacek found the original poems printed in a local newsaper and was inspired by the story of a young man's passionate love for a Gypsy girl and his decision to leave home to follow her. It is clear that Janacek also identified with theyoungman'sinfatuation. He had recently fallen deeply in love with Kamila Stosslova , who provided the inspiration for many of his works. Ian Bostridge (tenor),
Ruby Philogene (mezzo), Rebecca Watson (soprano), Josephine Amankwah and Diana Moore (mezzos), Julius Drake (piano).
