Sunday Play: The Secret Commonwealth

on BBC Radio 3

John Purser's play is set in the late 17th century and takes its inspiration from the old Scots ballad Mill 0 Tiftie's Annie, based on the true story of a miller's daughter who fell in love with the trumpeter at Fyvie Castle in Aberdeenshire. The play's title comes from a work of the period by the Rev Robert Kirk about the spirit world of elves and fairies.
