Always attracted by the exotic, Bizet indulged this fascination in the opera Djamileh. The story of a slave girl, sold as a mistress and still willingly coming back for more, plumbs new depths of political incorrectness, but the music gave Bizet a new direction that would eventually lead to Carmen.
