At the Gate Theatre in April 1936 Arthur Young made a big success as Gladstone in Parnell-a success he repeated when the play was staged at the New that autumn. When he was appearing in it the BBC invited him to hear the only recording of Gladstone's voice, which was then in their possession. The resemblance was marked. He broadcast a speech from Parnell in ' Entertainment Parade '. This was followed by the record. He televised as Gladstone and played the part on the screen in Victoria the Great.
