JOHN CHANDOS describes the history and significance of the medieval custom of choosing a boy bishop to say prayers, dispense blessings and preach sermons as part of the light-hearted merrymaking of the Christmas season. He introduces extracts from one of the last sermons preached by a boy bishop - at Gloucester Cathedral in 1558. The extracts are read by DAVID PEARSON
