Two European giants of modern architecture - Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe - helped the skyscraper reach a new high point in its evolution as their work changed skylines across countless cities. In the early 1900s the tower was a symbol of the future, but what factors led to the dream being seen as fatally flawed, and housing projects demolished on both sides of the Atlantic?
