A Portrait of Jane Austen by David Cecil, abridged in 11 instalments by Monica Grey
Read by Lockwood West (1)
'Appropriately enough, It was on a visit to an 18th-century country house that I first made the acquaintance of Jane Austen. There, with the portraits of powdered and beruffled ladies and gentlemen staring down at me, my mother opened Pride and Prejudice and began to read it to me. By the time she had finished, I was wholly under the author's spell and have remained so ever since.'
