A File on 4 special report from East Germany.
Against the background of growing hostility in western Europe to the deployment of new NATO missiles, there are signs that public opinion within the Warsaw Pact is now also making itself heard. In East Germany increasing numbers of young people are refusing to do military service and are voicing their opposition to Soviet SS 20s as well as to
NATO weapons. The only organisation wholly independent of the East German Communist
Party - the Protestant
Church - is finding itself the focus for those elements of public opinion which no longer accept the State's doctrine that the only threat to peace comes from the West. Reporter Stuart Simon
