A programme for children under five
Nursery rhymes, atonies, and music
One of the first stories we included in these broadcasts for the under-fives was the tale by Joan E. Cass called ' Timothy Threepenny-bit,' and because it proved so popular we repeated it soon afterwards. That was ten weeks ago, yet still from time to time our correspondents reflect the strong impression the story made, and the desire of many children to hear it again. So this week, on Friday, it will be read once more by Julia Lang. ' Please let us have " Splish-Splash-Splosh " again,' say the postcards and letters, making clear what it is that entrenches the story so firmly in the children's imaginations. For those satisfyingly wet and exuberant splashes can be repeated over and over again, long after the broadcast, just for the sake of the sheer delight which small children take in playing with sounAs and rhythms; while of course, those ' splish-splash-sploshes ' are translations into sounds of all the fun of kicking one's feet through puddles in Wellingtons.
