Johan Svendsen was one of the greatest conductors Norway has produced. He studied as a violinist under the patronage of Charles V , but paralysis of the hand made him turn to composition. His Symphony in D established his reputation as a composer. For about ten years he was conductor of the Christiania Musical Association, and in 1883 became Court Conductor at the Norwegian capital.
