On 24 March 1980 an armed gang hi-jacked a lorry carrying over £3 million worth of silver bullion.
It was one of Britain's biggest robberies and when most of the bullion was recovered three months later it was described as a major coup for Scotland Yard's Robbery Squad. A year later it emerged that a huge reward had been paid to an anonymous informer. But Panorama tonight reveals that a senior Scotland Yard policeman tried to block that payment. The programme also reveals disturbing new evidence about the man who masterminded the robbery and the damage he has done to what the Yard has called its main weapon in the fight against organised crime, the supergrass system.
