Pipe Dreams
Until recently the skirling of massed Scots pipe bands disguised the fact that a bewildering variety of pipes are made and played in the British Isles. These range from the highly sophisticated bellows-blown uillean pipes of Ireland, the sweet-toned small pipes of the Lowlands and Northumbria, and the strident English great pipe, to the Cornish pipes copied from a carved medieval pew-end in a church on Bodmin Moor.
