The Thieving Magpie is a comic opera and was produced in Milan in 1817, and in London four years later, where it became very popular. The Overture is more simple in construction than most of Rossini's other overtures : it consists of two sections, the first in a rather majestic rhythm of martial character, and the second is based on a fast three-in-a-bar melody, which is typical of the composer's style.
