Secrets of the Citadel
In a report from Aldermaston, Martin Bashir investigates the conspiracy of silence surrounding safety at Britain's top-secret nuclear weapons factory. Behind the high security fencing that guards the production area known as the Citadel, the next generation of Britain's nuclear arsenal is still being constructed in buildings that were condemned 15 years ago by the only independent inquiry into the Atomic
Weapons Establishment. The concerns of workers on site interviewed in the programme are echoed by a former director, who says it was always his intention that any new nuclear weapons should be built in safe, new facilities. "We haven't had any disasters," he says, "but prefer to move into modern facilities before you get such a disaster."
