A weekly programme about work in the world of science
Freezing and Drying by R. J. C. Harris, Ph.D . of the Chester Beatty Research Institute
In London this week scientists from many countries have been discussing the conditions under which living cells may be preserved by freezing. These techniques open up the possibility of freezing whole organisms, and even-since bacteria and viruses can be frozen and dried-of freeze-drying tissue and then keeping it at ordinary temperatures. The end in view is to be able to restore preserved tissues for use as functional grafts.
