Turandot - who imposes cryptic riddles on her suitors only to execute them when they fail to answer; Dennis O'Neill is Calaf - the stranger whose passion undermines her power; and Cristina Gallardo-Domas makes her Royal Opera debut as Liu -the slave girl who loves Calaf deeply and is prepared to sacrifice her own life so that his desire for Turandot should be fulfilled.
