Denis Aplvor , who was born in 1916 at Collinstown, Eire, of Welsh parents, studied composition with Patrick Hadley and Alan Rawsthorne. His setting of T. S. Eliot 's poem ' The Hollow Men ' was broadcast from a London Contemporary Music Centre concert a year ago. He began to learn Spanish before the war; his settings of Lorca's poems were written after his return from India in 1945, where he served in the R.A.M.C.
Doreen Carwithen was born in 1922 at
Haddenham, Bucks. She studied at the R.A.M. under William Alwyn ; among her workt are two overtures, a concerto for piano and strings, and two string quartets. Her String Quartet No. 1, written in 1945 was awarded the first A. J. Clements Prize two years ago. Harold Rutland
