First of 13 programmes examining the relationship of Tchaikovsky as man and musician to other leading composers in the Russia he knew. The Russian Orthodox Church provided the only long-standing musical tradition in Russia, and this first programme illustrates Tchaikovsky's response to that heritage. FATHER MICHAEL FOR-TOUNATTO takes us through the Sunday liturgy, and the BBC SINGERS, conducted by KERRY WOODWARD , perform the musical sections, in settings by Tchaikovsky, Kalinnikov, Tschesnokov, Kompaneisky and Ippolitov-Ivanov.
