The Colour of Music: 2: Breakin' the Chains - the Birth of the Blues

on BBC Radio 2

Lionel Richie narrates a series that looks at the huge influence black people have had on popular music.

How the slaves' "field hollers" developed into the blues - songs performed by just voice and guitar. The programme also looks at how Memphis, Detroit and Chicago became melting pots for this music and features interviews with John Lee Hooker, BB King and Sam Philips, as well as blues classics from the twenties onwards.
