TEWKESBURY DRAMA FESTIVAL

on Regional Programme Midland

View in Radio Times

Excerpts from the final scenes of E. Martin Browne 's production of ' MURDER IN THE
CATHEDRAL' by T. S. Eliot with Robert Speaight as Archbishop Thomas Becket
Performed in the open air against the West Front of the Abbey by the full London Company (by arrangement with J. P. Mitchelhill and New
Mercury, Ltd.) with a commentary by E. Martin Browne and Owen Reed
Tonight's broadcast will attempt to reflect a picture of the Festival as a whole. The setting-the West Front of the Abbey, itself in a corner of the Abbey yard, enclosed by trees on one side and a high wall on the other-is not only most impressive but produces a magnificently resonant and live quality of speech. Robert Speaight , who plays Archbishop Thomas Becket , has made the part famous both in London and the Provinces. E. Martin Browne , who is acting as commentator with Owen Reed , was also responsible for the London production.
