A look at one of Britain's favourite comedians, whose career spanned several decades of stage, radio, film and television. Born in Liverpool in 1900, he became a superstar in 1938 when he starred in the radio comedy Band Waggon. After his first television series in 1953, he was fully employed until his death in 1982.
