West Germany's
Inhibited Society
Nearly 36 years after the War the Federal Republic of Germany is a model of prosperity, peace and democracy. However, West German society is not at ease. Unlike most of their European neighbours, West Germans cannot look back on an unbroken national tradition and find it difficult to face up to their past.
Douglas Stuart has been to the Federal Republic to find out why German men and women carry a ' knife in the mind ' that cuts out many of the normal reactions and feelings expressed by people in the rest of the world.
