For example, the cinema orchestra provided a regular Income, and department stores and tea rooms often hired musicians. Then in 1927 the cinema achieved synchronised music, the slump of the 1930s lay ahead and the future became bleak for the professional musician. Mr Potts and Mr Pendle were among them.
