Part 2 Graduale (Hungarian Coronation Mass), for chorus and orchestra
Aspects of Liszt's music little known to the musical public are illustrated in this programme, the first of a series devoted to romantic composers. His dramatic gifts, particularly, are apparent in the symphonic poem. ' Hamlet' and in ' Les Morts,' written in memory of the composer's son and receiving today its first performance in England. An excerpt from a Mass written for the coronation of Franz-Josef as King of Hungary represents Liszt's religious works, while the vivid portrayals of scenes from Lenau's ' Faust ' reveals the typically romantic aspect of his art. The Faust legend attracted other composers associated with or deriving inspiration from Liszt, notably Berlioz, whose Damnation of Faust will be heard on Saturday, and Busoni, a selection of whose piano works was given in a recital on Monday.
