The Cutteslowe Walls

on BBC Radio 4 FM

In 1934 a private developer in North Oxford built high brick walls across the two roads linking his houses with the council estate next door. it meant the tenants no longer had easy access to buses and shops. Despite repeated attempts to bring them down, the Cutteslowe walls remained in place until 1959. This programme tells their bizarre story, with testimony from residents on both sides of the divide and from those involved in the campaign to demolish them.
