The distinguished scholar and writer on Africa and its affairs - and the BBC Reith Lecturer in 1961 - talks about the year she spent as a young woman in Somaliland. It was the first time she saw Africa; and if it did not begin her interest in what was to become her life's preoccupation - that had been awakened by childhood reading - that year was crucial in deciding the direction of her career.
