Not all the great composers have devoted themselves exclusively to ' great music'. Some lighter sides are suggested by Palestrina's Madrigals, Chabrier's set of quadrilles on themes by Wagner called ' Souvenirs de Munich
Schoenberg's cabaret songs and Beethoven's contratanze; Donizetti's string quartet also offers an off-duty activity and Stravinsky writes a polka for a prima ballerina who turns out to be an elephant.
