Jackie McLean grew up in Harlem. He played in a neighbourhood band that included
Sonny Rollins and Kenny Drew. After school he would jam and study with Bud Powell. Alyn Shipton learns how Powell acted as his mentor and gained him entry into the Miles Davis band where he was playing alongside Sonny Rollins. Producer Dave Batchelor
