View in Radio Times

A sketch of a personality by A. P. Ryan
John Mitchel (1815-1875) was an Ulster-born Irish nationalist whose memory has been overshadowed by the two men who spanned his life, O'Connell and Parnell. He was sentenced to fourteen years' transportation, escaped from Van Diemens Land to the United States and became a champion of the slave-holders' cause
