Alban Berg 's Five Orchestral Songs (settings of aphorisms sent to the composer on postcards by the poet Peter Altenberg ) were written in 1912. Two of them were performed in Vienna the following year, but the strange character of both words and music evoked so much hostility from the audience that the concert broke up in disorder. They are still unpublished: Berg's widow had tihe score sent to Jasoha Horenstein , who was a friend of the composer, and he gave the first performance of the songs in their entirely early this year.
