1683-1764
Always one of the more controversial figures in music history, even during his lifetime Rameau had the distinction of being criticised by some for being too revolutionary and by others for being too conservative. He is best known today for his operas and ballets, but did not actually write music for the theatre until he was 50. Each of this week's programmes examines a different side of his musical output.
