Paul Gambaccini

on BBC Radio 1 England

with an appreciation of Eric Clapton
"He was the original rock music guitar hero although Hank Marvin and blues players would have been his influences. He suddenly captured the public's fancy in the mid-60s. After his work with John Mayall he came to international prominence with Cream, had a brief stint with Blind Faith, followed by his spectacular album 'Layla'. In recent years he's mellowed, coming under the influence of country musicians like Don Williams. He still plays well but many fans want him to play in the ferocious style which lit his rock recordings."
