Written and presented by Michael Wood
The Domesday Book is possibly the most famous survey in the world.
Commissioned 900 years ago by William the Conqueror, it set out to record in minute detail every man, woman, child, barn, ploughshare, cow and pig across the length and breadth of England. It's fascinating; it's unique; and it's the forerunner of every other survey and census taken in this country. The book itself takes pride of place in the Public Record
Office in London. In its 1,700 pages of Latin text are clues to some of today's most relevant historical questions. How did England, a remote country on the edge of Europe, come to dominate the world? How has our past shaped the England of today? Who are the English? In the first of five remarkable films, Michael Wood begins a journey across the contemporary English landscape, in search of the roots of English history and the English people. Music CLAIRE HAMILL
