Sunday Play: Rossum's Cyber-Caf

on BBC Radio 3

By Jeffrey Robinson. In 1921 Czech playright Karel Capek wrote R.U.R.,
Rossums's Universal Robots, a satirical allegory based on the nature of power and what it means to be human. (Capek coined the word robot from the Czech word robota
-worker-to mean an artificial human.) Jeffrey Robinson uses R.U.R. as the inspiration for a science fantasy in which the role of the robots is taken by the whole of the internet. In Rossum's Cyber-Cafe, cyberspace has insinuated itself into every aspect of our lives and we are unable, either to control it or to function without it.
