The recent development of the gas centrifuge for separating isotopes of uranium, coupled with the possibility that lasers could be used as cheap triggers for H-bombs, seems at first sight to militate for an increase in membership of the nuclear club. Mr. Maddox discusses these technical possibilities and the effects they are likely to have in altering the ' nuclear balance of power.
