ORCHESTRAL CONCERT

on Third Programme

View in Radio Times

Strings of the Philharmonia Orchestra
(Leader. Max Salpeter )
Conducted by Walter Goehr
This is the first of three weekly programmes in which all Purcell's Fantasias (including the two In Nomines) will be played by a string orchestra in a version prepared from the original manuscripts by Walter Goehr in collaboration with Michael Tippett. The Fantasias, written when Purcell was twenty-one (and first published in 1927. in an edition by André Mangeot and Peter Warlock ), are generally believed to have been designed for a consort of viols, and it is probable that in the seventeenth, century such music was often performed with more than one player to a part. Later in the year it is hoped to broadcast the Fantasias in performances by solo strings. Harold Rutland
