As the Germans invade France in 1940, radio repairman Julien flees with his pregnant wife and child and boards a train for the coast. On the danger-fraught journey, he meets a beautiful German Jewess on the run from the Nazis. They embark on a passionate love affair - but what will they do when they get off the train?
