1750: deep in the South
Americanjungle Fr Gabriel, a Jesuit priest, establishes the outpost mission of San Carlos with the hostile Guarani
Indians. He is joined by a former slave trader called
Mendoza who is determined to do penance for his former sins. The following years are spent turning the mission into a thriving self-sufficient community. However a deal between Spain and Portugal jeopardises the future of the mission and leaves Fr Gabriel , Mendoza and the Guarani facing almost certain death.
