Recital

on Third Programme

Peter Pears (tenor)
Dennis Brain (horn)
Mewton-Wood (piano)
Schubert wrote "Auf dem Strom" for the only public concert of his works given during his lifetime, on March 3, 1828, the year in which he died aged thirty-one. The two young poets set by Michael Tippett in "The Heart's Assurance" fell in the last war; and Noel Mewton-Wood and Dennis Brain have died, tragically early, since they took part in this recital in the Third Programme on January 28, 1953.
"... and what's transfigured shall live on Long after Death has come and gone"
(Alun Lewis)
