The war in Europe ended when Gisela Birke was still a schoolgirl. She lived with her family on an estate in north-eastern Germany. The Russians were advancing and Gisela was sent westwards on her own. This programme describes the long and fearful journey she made across the length and breadth of a country in the throes of defeat.
