POEMS FROM THE MANYOSHU

The Manyoshu was the first great anthology of Japanese poetry. Compiled in the latter half of the 8th century A.D., it included poems from as early as the 5th. The poets represented range from emperor, prince, and courtier to fisherman and frontier-guard.
