In the Appalachian mountains, some have interpreted a passage of the Bible literally. Church services include the handling of poisonous snakes and the drinking of strychnine. But not all the community shares the faith and fervour of the serpent-handlers. One man has been to jail twice for stealing snakes to "save" his brother.
