Richard Austin comes from a distinguished musical family, his father being Frederic Austin, the well-known baritone, composer, and conductor, and his uncle Ernest Austin, the composer.
Richard Austin studied at the Royal College of Music and took conducting under Sir Adrian Boult and Dr. Malcolm Sargent. On leaving the College he acted for many years as an accompanist and a conductor in theatrical shows of all descriptions from revue to opera and ballet, including the Royal Carl Rosa Company. In 1934 he succeeded Sir Dan Godfrey as Musical Director to the Bournemouth Corporation.
