Since its first performance as a ballet, by the Camargo Ballet Society in 1931, Vaughan Williams's musical interpretation of William Blake's remarkable series of illustrations to ' The Book of Job ' has come to be recognised as one of the finest of the composer's works, and, in its rigid adherence to the spirit of Blake, combined with the complete independence of expression we have come to expect of Vaughan Williams, accepted as a master work of British music.
