Classic Singles

on BBC Radio 2

6/6. Tony Visconti singles out six 45rpm hits for their lasting significance. He continues with ex-Wham! frontman
George Michael 's debut solo smash Careless
Whisper, which established the singer's signature breath-heavy balladeer style away from the relentlessly choreographed duo's snap-happy cheeriness. A huge UK radio and sales hit in the summer of 1984, the single featured a slick saxophone chorus and the cheesy line "guilty feet have got no rhythm". American record-buyers lapped it up in 1985, guaranteeing the singer future stratospheric chart-attacking success as a stadium-filling solo star.
