5: The Bruckner Influence
In Wolf's Vienna, the music and presence of Anton Bruckner were a unique influence. As a student and later as a critic, Wolf supported Bruckner against the scepticism of the local establishment. In some of Wolf's songs, and at times in his opera Der Corregidor, the echoes of Bruckner are as strong as the echoes of the man who inspired them both - Wagner.
