A bus driver, a medical research scientist and a chartered accountant, all from the home counties, are the first contestants in the 1996 Masterchef competition. The amateur cooks have two-and-a-half hours to cook a three-course meal for four people on a budget of £30. Hosted by Loyd Grossman with guests TV chef Gary Rhodes and actress Geraldine James.
