Essex village whose inhabitants are obsessed by the trivial happenings of life. He is deeply religious and his emotional naivety leads him to fall victim of a cruel practical joke - a joke that misfires with comic and tragic repercussions, for Rufus becomes a prisoner whose only crime is his innocence.
