A Portrait of John Donne by PETER PORTER with John Shrapnel as John Donne
John Donne died 350 years ago on 31 March 1631. His life was characterised by extremes; youthful flamboyance at Lincoln's' Inn and a promising ; political career came to a swift end after Donne's secret marriage to the Lord Keeper's niece in 1601. Yet after years of poverty and isolation.
Donne became Dean of St Paul 's and one of England's most popular and celebrated preachers. His writing - from the most passionate love poems to the sober doubts and admonitions of the religious sonnets and sermons-reflects the drama and turmoil of Donne's life.
