Wagner's theory of the total work of art, which he called the Gesamtkunstwerk. had a far-reaching effect on later artistic developments. In these two talks Edward Lockspeiser investigates the origin of this theory and shows how it is illustrated in the interrelated spheres of music, literature, and painting in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
